I tried the 7 Skin Method
I groan a lot over kbeauty trends because so many tend to be pushed to sell products, not solve problems.
I should back up and explain something: I’m into skincare in order to solve problems. I would not invest so much time in putting things on my face unless there was something undesirable-to-me going on (acne is the big one for me). The idea of adding some step to my routine just for shits and giggles is not what I’m about right now. The idea of adding 7 additional steps that don’t have big payoff is especially ludicrous.
The thing is, in the course of angrily slapping acids on my face this winter, my nose skin got impossibly dry. Like, this shit is NOT going away. I also have a backlog of really nice toners that I don’t want to toss, but also can’t use fast enough. And I’m not the biggest sheet mask fan.
While I initially groaned when thinking about the 7 Skin Method — applying seven layers of toner one after the other — my flakyass nose was like “ayy girl stfu and water me.”
So I whipped out the Yuripibu Parsley Toner from the massive skincare routine Glow Recipe sent me as a New Year’s present and got to layering.
Holy shit, it works. Seven layers on all of my skin ended up feeling disgusting; there’s no need for that many on my oily-to-normal skin. 3 or 4 would be totally fine. But seven layers on my dreadfully dry nose? Fucking magical. If your skin is fine right now, no need to go layer crazy. But if your skin is dry and peely, just spot treat it with some extra layers of moisturizing toner or first essence. It’s faster than a sheet mask and it’s very similar, so you’re unlikely to “suffocate” your skin as long as the product is compatible with your skin.
I’ve tried this with a few toners and first essences and all seem good. I’m especially liking the IOPE Bio Essence because it’s so minimally hydrating and I want to use up the bottle at long last. I now have a bottle of toner next to my computer and I periodically look up, remember my nose situation, and slap on another layer. FINALLY my skin is looking and feeling healthy.
The Lipstick League – week of 2.6.17
Question of the Week: Is there a beauty brand that you feel is in need of a makeover or overhaul? If so, what would you do to reinvigorate the brand?
Urgh, I hate to say this, but Kevyn Aucoin, which I love. They have so many amazing products, but I feel like their marketing is sort of stuck because how do you market a makeup line after the founder’s untimely passing? I would actually hire Pony to serve as the creative director of the brand. Even before Pony developed the Pony Effect line, I thought she’d be a killer creative director of KA — kind of like how Lisa Eldridge is the creative director of Lancome. Pony really brings a lot of what I loved about Kevyn Aucoin to makeup, and I think that she could introduce the brand to a wider audience in Asia.
