It’s the WEEKEND!!! I’m looking forward to spending the weekend writing (curling up in my blankets), enjoying high culture (reading some NC-17 fanfiction), and maybe catching up on kdramas (watching short webdramas due to inattention). I like to think that blog readers are paying the bills (reading my blog) when they stop by. ahahah No matter what, thank you for being here! It always amazes me that people actually read things I write.
This weekend notes edition contains info about my latest Avecko kbeauty proxy shopping haul, my winter skincare faves, and the best posts of the week from my lovely colleagues at the Lipstick League.
My Latest Avecko Haul
I wrote about Avecko, the Korean proxy shipping service (they buy stuff from Korean sites that don’t ship abroad, receive it, and then send it to you) more than two years ago, and WOW, the kbeauty shopping landscape has changed so much in the meantime. These days sites like Vuty Design that do ship abroad offer new products from mainstream Korean brands almost the moment they’re offered for sale.
The gaping hole is still the really obscure brands with Naver storefronts and just a few products, and that’s when I go back to Avecko and get the wild stuff. For me, it’s honestly not about saving money (with Avecko’s handling fee and ePostG shipping, I end up paying quite a bit) — it’s about getting products for blog research.
First up is a product I’ve wanted FOREVER: SoyBio+’s Fermented Lumpoule 20.
In total, I paid about $63.60 for this 80ml bottle. I’ve never tried this product before, but I’m a big fan of SoyBio+’s little lumpoules (also impossible to buy without Avecko). Now that I have the ingredient list in front of me and feel the product, I realize that it’s not just a big bottle of the tiny lumpoule formula, but a completely different (waterier) thing entirely. So I need to test this and report back.
OK HOLD UP, FIRST THINGS FIRST: I just realized while trying to figure out what the middle product is that it’s a toner named after Dokdo Island, which is SUCH a hot button issue for Korea and Japan (they both claim the small island) that I sat through a whole historical movie that I eventually figured out existed mainly to argue that Dokdo was always Korean even if it didn’t appear on the first Korean map. I’ve also seen Dokdo products from Skylake, another kbeauty brand. I…I don’t think I’ve ever seen politics as entwined with beauty products as I’ve seen in kbeauty. I mean, ibuybeauti had a sale to celebrate the impeachment of South Korean President Park Geun Hye.
I actually bought this to try Round Lab’s cleansing gel, which supposedly has a 5.5 pH level. I was curious about the product after seeing Round Lab’s Instagram post about it, but nervous about getting burned yet again by another sight-unseen kbeauty product, so when I saw that @kbeautysavedmyskin on Instagram tested it and verified the pH level, ding dong, I was in.
I opted for the value set with the cleansing gel, Dokdo toner (the pH of this is higher than I’d like — it looks to be over 6.0, so I can’t use it as a pH-adjusting toner), and cream (which smells like lavender, not a fan) because I sort of thought “why not?” but…I’m thinking that I should have just gone for the cleansing gel. ahaha
Winter Skincare Staples
Question of the Week: Name three skincare products (face and/or body) that are staples for you in cold weather months.
I really like emollients in the winter months, so I’m slathering on oil balms like Farmacy’s Sleep Tight and Hanyul’s Ja Cho Moisturizing Balm. I also dig creams with tons of emollients like Blossom Jeju Pink Camellia Soombi Blooming Cream.
