Umm, remember how I spent a truckload of money on beauty products last year (and didn’t end up loving much)? This Beautylish Lucky Bag 2017 was one of the final purchases I made last year, and while it has some good stuff, it really fits the theme of 2016. No. More. Mystery. Boxes/Bags! Stop, self!
I’m not a regular Beautylish customer. In fact, when I browse the site I inevitably end up going elsewhere to shop (were I a wiser person, that would have been a sign that perhaps their mystery bag would not be a great fit for me, but ANYWAY!). I signed up for early access and got a few helpful emails before the launch on Boxing Day, December 26 — including one that warned me to check my spam at 11am PST / 2pm EST if the email didn’t show up in my main inbox.
By the time I got to the site at 2:01pm, XL Lucky Bags had sold out (all Lucky Bags were available for sale early to Beautylish customers who spent $1000 or more in 2016), so I grabbed a regular bag for $75 plus $7 shipping. It shipped on January 5th (a bit ahead of schedule) and it arrived at my office Tuesday, January 10th.
While perusing the #luckybag2017 tag on Instagram, I decided I would be fine with just about anything except for a giant Jeffree Star palette (if you want to see a review of the palette and controversies associated with the brand check out this long, comprehensive video). People were getting amazing stuff like Viseart and Natasha Denona palettes, so I was hopeful.
… … …
I obviously got the Jeffree Star palette.
SO! This is kind of a conundrum. Part of me wants to burn the thing and the other part of me realizes that someone else might enjoy a brand spanking new palette with middling reviews in cheap packaging. I think that there are some very nice products in this lucky bag, but I don’t particularly need any of them and think that they might bring some joy to someone else (the winner has the option of telling me to keep/destroy/donate anything in the bag btw, no need to take on negative energy just because you got “lucky”). By the way, I skipped swatching and opening stuff so the winner gets clean products.
He’s a rundown of what’s in the bag, this week’s Lipstick League, and a chance to win the whole bag at the end.
Beautylish Lucky Bag 2017 Unboxing
I love Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed highlighters, but the sample of Moonstone I have seemed to wash me out.
I tried a sample of this before and found that it didn’t quite play right with my skin; I prefer Beauty Water. In case you think this is coming out due to me being emo about this bag: I’ve turned down Bioderma press samples when they were offered in the past for the same reason.
This has great reviews and looks really nice. I might buy one in the future!
Unbranded brush that honestly doesn’t smell super great, $noidea
I can’t actually find this brush on the Beautylish site, so no idea what’s up.
This set looks nice, but I don’t think it would be a great match for me.
Seriously, watch that.
Total retail value of the bag: $151.90 + the value of a brush that doesn’t smell great
Thoughts: I need to stop buying mystery bags and boxes and just have cash on hand for when Cult Beauty does gift with purchase goody bags because I’m using the shit out of those products and loving them. I really should have confronted the possibility that I might a Jeffree Star product more seriously when planning my order. Overall, what can I say? Beautylish delivered on their promise of products valued at double the price I paid. Given the size of my collection and disinterest in a lot of what Beautylish sells, this was a bad call on my part.
The Lipstick League – week of 1.9.16
Question of the Week: What is your go-to shade of nail polish? Do you have a different go-to shade for your toes?
Pony Effect made this (tragically discontinued) glitter glass nail polish that I’m going to use until the bottle dries up. VASTLY easier than real Korean glass nails and super easy to fix up. For toes, I stick to Sinful Colors in black; that polish is dead cheap, but I find that it stays better than most. I really want to try Smith & Cult polish — I hear it’s great!
