If you’ve ever wondered about the history of bathing, check out the article I wrote for Racked on my visit to the super luxurious spa at Colonial Williamsburg and the pretty disgusting reality of non-bathing for US colonists.
Thoughts on the Hypothetical Best Sunscreen
I was at the nutritionist this week and something she said reminded me to write this post. She said that the best exercise is the one you do.
Similarly, the best sunscreen not only provides the minimum amount of protection you need, but is also 1) the one you actually wear daily and 2) the one you wear enough of daily.
In other words, you have to wear it and wear it right. Some of the most prominent people in beauty have confessed to not wearing sunscreen on a daily basis. At one point several years ago, that was me, too.
As a skincare fan, there’s a temptation to hold out for the best of everything…but for most people where I live (yes, I’m generalizing), merely wearing sunscreen every day is a massive change. Most people I know who “wear sunscreen” daily get it in the form of a moisturizer. That’s probably not going to pack enough of a protective punch. And sunscreen that’s perfect, but gathers dust due to disuse isn’t going to help your skin. Others find a good sunscreen and dab it on so preciously that it can’t deliver the stated amount of protection. Virtuous purchases alone don’t protect your skin.
I’m going to talk especially to the folks in the U.S. right now: we don’t have a culture of wearing sunscreen. Yes, some genius grandmas and aunts were on the sunscreen train way before it was cool, but that’s not the norm. In fact, we have a culture of tanning. It results in a lot of avoidable skin issues.
This week Glossier launched their new Invisible Shield sunscreen, which is SPF 35 and costs $34 for 30ml. Skincare fans have raised questions about the price and aspects of the formula. My bottle is waiting for me at the office, so I haven’t tested it yet. I’m curious, but cautious, especially since it would cost more than $1 per day for this sunscreen in order to use the recommended amount of product.
That said, it’s pretty damn exciting to see US-based companies talking up sunscreen and using their clout to push the idea of daily sunscreen. It really is the best anti-aging tool we’ve got, and it can prevent some terrible forms of cancer.
The sunscreen I love at the moment is $12.70, 140ml, and has a pump. I’m wrestling with my love because it’s not PA++++ (only PA+++), but it dries down so well and the pump makes measuring so easy that I’m thinking that for me, this may be as good as it gets: a sunscreen I enjoy wearing daily that I apply at full concentration every time.
That said, it’s my job to test products almost endlessly, so here are the sunscreens in my testing lineup right now (clicking on the photo will take you to the shopping page):
The Lipstick League – week of 5.9.17
Question of the Week: What was the last bottle of nail polish that you purchased?
Ahh it’s been so long! Probably some Modi gel nail polish. I have a Modi lamp for doing self-nails and I have a ton of the polishes. I really need to bust them out…
