While poking around on a Korean site, I came across a company called Monthly Cosmetics, which sells a *surprise* one-month supply of face cream. The twist is that each cream is customized for each buyer. (Before you get excited, Monthly Cosmetics only ships within Korea and the company says that part of the reason for the 30-day supply is because they skip preservatives. I won’t be importing, even though a buying service such as Avecko could probably do it.)
Get this: you pay more for more active ingredients of your choice. 0-1 ingredients costs 14,960 won or about $13.41 plus shipping.
To make your cream, you do a quiz that asks your age, gender, skin type, and skin goals (goals are paired with ingredients). As you add more goals, a banner switches from standard to intensive to premium and your cost goes up.
The company offers a discount for subscribing (longer subscription = bigger discount) and the option to add a 10ml extra pot of your cream for a bit more.
As I explained in a video about K-pop boyband beauty deals for Racked, Korean cosmetics companies pay a ton to their spokespeople — and it really does work to boost sales. In the case of Monthly Cosmetics, they say that they’re saving money by skipping high-profile brand models. Their packaging is really basic. The money is going into customization.
I have mixed feelings about skincare customization. To be honest, I don’t even feel like figuring out one’s skin type is a great use of time — if you have a skin type that needs special products, you probably don’t need a complicatedly coded web quiz to tell you that. And well-formulated products just tend to work for lots of different skins.
That said, for people who are stuck on the edge of the pool because they’re freaked out about buying the wrong stuff for their skin, this sort of super customized approach might be what it takes to get started.
If you love the idea of customization, check out Function of Beauty hair care (I’ve been using this for awhile and really like it) and Innisfree’s Jeju Lava Seawater Boosting Ampoule plus Effector tubes that deliver ingredients that allow one to make a custom mix.
How do you feel about super customized face cream? Jelly that it’s only in Korea now or willing to pass on this no matter what?
