Team, something amazing happened: someone gave me actual money — currency that buys stuff — to write about kpop. Yup, Racked took a chance on my sketchy ass and let me write the script for a video about kpop boyband beauty deals (that’s the video below). I. Am. SCREAMING.
Dig the video? Like and share it on fb so Racked knows to keep covering kpop!
To celebrate my transition to professional fangirl, I’ve rounded up and ranked the products I bought due to boyband beauty endorsements. The results are…not…good. ahahaha
Products I Bought Due to Kpop Boyband Beauty Deals, Ranked from Worst to Best
I saw Kim Hyun Joong of SS501 and Boys Over Flowers promoting products from the Face Shop back in like 2012, and decided to take a chance. The thing that convinced me to try this bb cream was that it was one of the rare few I could actually swatch in person near my NYC office.
Oh lord. Holy hell. I don’t know how to describe how awful this bb cream was. It looked fine in the store, but once I finally took the time to look at it in natural light, it was entirely the wrong color and honestly gray. I looked like I was wearing a death mask. I’m also suspicious about the increase in zits that coincided with my time wearing this.
DISGUSTING, kind of like KHJ himself (if you’ve missed what’s happened in his personal life since the early part of the decade, phew, have you got some reading to do.)
There’s a moment in this commercial where Kyungsoo from EXO turns to the camera after touching the product to his nose and I was like YES OK I NEED THIS. No choice, sorry, EXO bias told me to.
I grabbed a pack a few years ago at a Nature Republic shop in NYC and it was horrendous. The liquidy first step followed by the peeling mask second step created a feeling of absolute skin hell, like, I thought my nose skin was busted forever. There was BURNING. In general, I’m not a fan of stuff that’s supposed to rip things out of your pores, but this is the most unpleasant iteration of that kind of product I’ve ever tried.
I’m sorry, Kyungsoo, I tried.
Etude House bb cream: not actually bad! I could never find a shade that matched my skin and it usually worked best over skin that was in good shape (the cotton fit is not very forgiving on dry skin), but lordddddddddddd this was an upgrade from skin 79 and that Face Shop nightmare.

This toothpaste is a recent addition to the collection, and it’s all thanks to J-Hope brushing his teeth on twitter. The taste and scent are ok, but I find the exuberant foam to be a bit much. I don’t hate it, but I won’t be repurchasing.
Finally, an actual good product. The Fruits Punch Sleeping Pack helps support a theory I have: the hotter the star pushing the product, the faster you should run from it. The fruity sleeping packs don’t get any special SHINee promotion and they cost just $10, but they smell good and do the thing quite reasonably. Then again, I bought the Saem’s lipsticks that they released with SHINee way back when SHINee started as spokespeople, and those were also good. Huh. Maybe the Saem is just a good brand?
#TheSaem’s Fruits Punch Sleeping Pack in Peach is very similar to the Aritaum ceramide sleeping pack I reviewed a few days ago, but it has one important advantage: a juicy, totally delicious peach fragrance. It can easily be bought for $10 (including shipping from Korea) and it has a nice gel-cream texture that provides what my oily skin wants; it may very well be too light for dry skin. It’s not really exceptional enough to merit a blog review, but it’s not a bad product and I can see people with oily and normal skin liking it.
The Lipstick League – week of 8.14.17
Question of the Week: If you could gift everyone 3 of your favorite beauty products, what would you give?
Hmm… Pat McGrath’s Gold 001 pigment because omfg. It was limited edition, and I know so many people would kill for it now. The original version of Lador’s LPP hair conditioner (the one that looked like summer egg yolk) because that stuff was FLAWLESS and GONE. And Farmacia SS. Annunziata Vaniglia del Madagascar, which is my favorite perfume right now.
